What started as an airline employee who went to great lengths for a passenger in need has resulted in a lifelong friendship

There is no good time to lose your luggage.

But if you have to meet the prime minister in a few hours and you don’t have backup clothes, then one of the most inconvenient times is when your luggage doesn’t show up on arrival.

This was the situation Hana Sofia Lopes faced.

The Luxembourg actor traveled to Canada via New York to work on film, but there was no sign of a change of clothes seven days later.

With a series of important meetings and media events, the Portugal-based artist was desperate for her belongings.

When nothing appeared on the carousel, she told CNN she was forced to give up hope and go to a media event in the clothes she was wearing.

“No shoes. No brush for my hair. No makeup. No socks. Nothing. Just me and my purse.”

She bought a last-minute dress in New York and boarded a plane to Montreal, but her luggage was still nowhere to be seen.

Upon arrival at the Canadian airport, Lopes found herself begging airport staff to help her find her things.

She was due to meet with the National Film Fund and the Luxembourg Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, in a few hours. It was a claim that must have sounded outrageous and a little ridiculous to the 20-year-old airport employee behind the Montreal Airport help desk.

However, Azalia Claudine Becerril Angulo, a part-time airport worker, felt compelled to help her. Lopes was almost in tears.

“I wanted to help her. Normally people are rude and very aggressive. She was different,” Angulo told CNN. She felt an instant warmth toward the passenger.

However, she managed to track down the luggage. Unfortunately, it was still in Frankfurt and there was no way it would arrive in Montreal in time for the event. Crestfallen explained to the actress that she was meeting with the head of her country and she didn’t even have makeup to put on.

What happened next shocked Lopes. Angulo revealed that when she wasn’t working at the airport, she was a professional makeup artist.

“If you want, I can come to your hotel in the afternoon and do your hair and makeup so you can attend your reception,” she said. “If I were in your place, I would go crazy too. So I really want to do it for free.

So that was exactly what happened.

Azalea and Hana Sofia showed up at the actress’s hotel that next afternoon and became fast friends. Speak a combination of Spanish, French and English

“It felt like meeting an old friend, which is crazy because I just met her the day before, but we were talking a lot,” Angulo said.

To top it off, the airline had been able to track down the back, which had arrived from Germany.

The two remain in correspondence and Lopes expects to return to Canada for film work in the near future.

Both women say their friendship shows how important empathy is when traveling, and not being so tense and stressed even when things don’t go according to plan.

“It’s proof that something good can come out of something bad,” says Lopes. “Trust the process.”
