Black Friday travel deals have returned after a two-year absence, with some bargains available for South Africans looking for an island getaway.

International flights, accommodation and discounted holiday packages have not been included in the Black Friday promotional period for the past two years due to pandemic-induced travel restrictions. This year, airlines and travel agencies are offering discounts for holidays in 2023 and 2024.

For most of the two years they were in lockdown, South Africans were not allowed to visit popular island destinations. Now Black Friday trips to Zanzibar, Mauritius, Seychelles and Maldives are being promoted.

Flight Center offers nearly 40 island holiday packages ranging from R13,000 per person for a trip to Zanzibar to R51,990 for a getaway to the Maldives.

The most affordable island getaway with Flight Centre’s Black Friday discount is a 7-night stay at the 4-star beach resort of Uroa Bay on Zanzibar. For R13,050 per person, the holiday package includes round-trip flights from Johannesburg, 7 nights accommodation and daily breakfast. This package, saving R4,340 per person, according to Flight Centre, is for travel between May 16 and June 30, 2023.

South African holidaymakers can also book a trip to Mauritius for less than R15,000 per person through Flight Centre’s Black Friday promotion. The 5-night stay at the 4-star Mythic Suites & Villas, located in a picturesque village in the northeast of the island, includes round-trip airfare and daily continental breakfast. It also includes a Mauritian-style welcome dinner and “homemade rum tasting,” 25% off lunch and 10% off dinner, for a big saving of R6,530, according to Flight Centre.

A holiday in the Seychelles, complete with 7 nights accommodation in a superior room at Club Med, is offered for R40,260 per person at Travelstart. This package, for travel in April 2023, includes three full meals per day with table wines, local beer and mineral drinks. It also includes an open bar. Travelers save up to R12,040 per person, according to Travelstart.

Travelstart also sells a December holiday package to the Maldives for R34,070 per person. For that price, travelers get 7 nights accommodation at Club Med Kani, three full meals a day, and an open bar.
